If everything seems to be going well, you must have overlooked something.

—Golden Gate Fortune Cookies

(Try them, you’ll like them)

For once things went her way. Someone tossed the Frisbee toward their group and Victoria reached out and caught it. The first time she’d ever caught anything. Steve turned and came loping gracefully across the grass. Muscular and toned, he made everything he did look effortless. Swimming, running, dribbling a ball down the court. He had been a great dancer too at the Welcome Dance. She could have danced all night with him, if only she hadn’t been too wussy to freak dance with him. If she had it to do over…

“Victoria,” he said, reaching out and taking the Frisbee. “What’s up? How’ve you been?”

“Fine, great,” she said, smiling so hard it made her face hurt. She even felt weak-kneed in his gorgeous presence. “I caught your water polo game the other day.”

“You did? Did you see where some dipshit almost made us forfeit the game by running into the pool area with a jar of something? Security came but the guy disappeared. I think it was a plot to sabotage us, put poison in the water, something like that. You didn’t get a look at him, did you?”

“Uh, no. I had to leave early. But I’m sure it was nobody I know.” God forbid anyone would think she was involved. Of course she did get a look at Gabe with the jar of water he was testing for the pH and bacteria. He’d told her about it the next day in class. Not that she wanted to hear about any of his extra credit experiments. Honestly, the guy had no sense of shame. No idea he’d done anything wrong at all. He was a hopeless case.

“Anyway, you’re having a party,” Steve said. “Can I bring some friends?”

He was coming! She didn’t care if he brought the whole water polo team. In fact, that would be great. Her party would take off. She looked down at Maggie and Cindy, who were pretending not to listen. They gave her a subtle thumbs-up sign.

“Oh, sure, of course.” She heaved a sigh of relief. Whatever happened at her party, she didn’t care as long as Steve would be there. It was worth the worry and the effort. He’d see her and he’d see her house. They’d have time to talk. He’d realize they were meant for each other. Just as long as his friends weren’t Cindy’s stepsisters. She could deal with neglect or too much interest, but she couldn’t deal with evil.
